For Old Town small business week, each day this week we will be honoring a small business that has been in the neighborhood for over 15 years. Today we feature Sara Jane, a neighborhood boutique store on Wells Street.

Tell us about Sara Jane. What led you to open it? What makes it unique?

Sara Jane is a fun contemporary woman’s clothing, accessory and gift item boutique.  We carry newer and lesser known brands and a price point, style and size range for everyone.  We strive to have something for everyone and to always make anyone and everyone feel welcome and happy.  We get new merchandise every single day, we carry different categories all the time and there is always something fun going on.  What makes us unique is what we carry, that you won’t see most places and how we want to make everyone feel.

What is something people might not realize about your business?

People might not realize how much the business and the store mean to me.  It means the world to me to make someone happy, comfortable and feel great in anything they get.  The best complement is always, ” I get more compliments on anything I get from Sara Jane than anything else I own.”  When I am the place that someone got their rehearsal dinner dress, shower dress, special occasion outfit, they remember that!

What brought you to Old Town? What led you to stay?

I moved to Chicago from St. Louis over 20 years ago and have only lived in Old Town.  I only wanted to open my store in Old Town.  I would not have opened if I didn’t get the location I wanted.  To me, Old Town is the best neighborhood and I wanted that more than just opening a store.  I stay due to my amazing landlords who have been great to me in good times and bad and due to the loyal clientele in the neighborhood.  Even when people move out of the neighborhood, they make a effort to come back and shop with me.  I also love the array of different businesses on our street that make it such a fun destination.  And also, that we are the closest ‘neighborhood’ to Michigan Avenue and all the tourist areas, so many people come to our ‘hood. As Realtor.com wrote a couple years ago, “Old Town Chicago is the best neighborhood in America. I am proud to have a business here.

Describe Old Town when you first opened and how it has changed.

The reason I only wanted to open in Old Town, aside from the fact that I hate communing and I live here too, is I saw the growth that was coming.  Old Town Village was being built, we are surrounded by high rises and neighborhoods.  We are sandwiched between the Gold Coast, Lincoln Park and River North.  Most of the businesses on the street have been here forever and were not going anywhere.  And mostly, there is a ‘neighborhoody’ feel and small town feel that I don’t get in other areas of town.  There is an odd special feeling of “Main Street” to me.

Is there anything else you would like to share about you or your business?

Everyday I am grateful for my business and how the neighborhood and residents of the neighborhood have welcomed me and allowed to stay here.  I try to grow and change the business as the neighborhood dictates and stay relevant and hopefully interesting and appealing to everyone that comes by!
