For Old Town small business week, each day this week we will be honoring a small business that has been in the neighborhood for over 15 years. Today we feature A Women’s Gym, a gym for women that has been on Wells Street for 19 years!

For many women, A Women’s Gym is that comfortable place to exercise. Two steps into our Gym, first time visitors say,“ It feels good in here, I am glad I came in”. I opened A Women’s Gym to teach Women how to get fit and stay fit, including how to lose weight and keep it off, doing it their way, incorporating 35 years of weight lifting, cardio and menu planning experience.
Nineteen years ago, I stepped onto Wells street for the first time. Priscila Satkoff, then the owner of Salpicon, a small restaurant that was in Old Town for almost 22 years, invited me to check out the space next door to her restaurant where she wanted me to consider opening up a small gym. I walked through that door, and have been there every since.
Fifth-teen years ago while walking through Old Town with my Mom, she said to me, “You know everybody.” She saw David, Maria, Mike and John, other small business owners, greet me with a smile and by my first name. I told her about each of them, their businesses and how long they had been in Old Town. I told her that, what’s great about the small businesses in Old Town is that you often get a chance to talk with the actual owner when you enter that business, like being in a small town.
Old Town has blossomed over the pass 19 years that my small business has been there. It feels, looks and sounds different, that difference is a revitalization of Old Town, and David, Maria, Mike, John and Janice are still at their businesses, there to greet you.
