The Old Town Merchants and Residents Association and the Commission of SSA 48 Old Town are happy to announce that the reconstitution and expansion of the Special Service Area was approved by the City Council on November 14, 2018! This came at the end of a 13-month long process that involved heavy community engagement which will inform the types of services that will be offered to the Old Town neighborhood for the next decade. The benefits of which will be offered in the expansion area starting next year.

The Special Service Area will now expand down to Hill Street, along Division east to LaSalle Drive, and east to Clark Street on North Avenue. Starting January 1, 2019, services such as snow removal, sidewalk litter pick up, landscaping, private security, pressure washing, etc, will be offered to the expansion areas. For those residents and businesses that have been in the SSA for the past decade, they will see their services stay the same and, in some cases, the services improve. The SSA 48 levy for properties in the expansion area will be seen in the summer of 2019.

The Old Town Merchants and Residents Association and the Commission of SSA 48 Old Town would like to thank the many residents and businesses that supported the reconstitution and expansion of the SSA. Thank you to both Alderman Walter Burnett and Alderman Brian Hopkins for their support through the City Council. They would also like to thank the engaging leadership of the SSA Reconstitution Advisory Committee, which steered us through this process. Thank you to the residents and business owners that came to the Finance Committee hearing on November 1, 2018 to speak in favor of the vital services that the SSA provides to keep Old Town a functioning district in Chicago. Finally, thank you to our consulting team, PLACE Consulting, who providing their expertise through this process.
